The following year, she wrote a play called “For Love of Biafra.” In her short story, “My Mother, the Crazy African,” Adichie shares her personal experiences of being caught between two distinct cultures during her college years in Connecticut. Her stories were also featured in Zoetrope: All-Story and Topic Magazine.
In 2003, Adichie’s debut novel, “Purple Hibiscus,” was published to critical acclaim. The novel was a finalist for the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2004 and won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book in 2005.
Half of a Yellow Sun, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s second novel, takes place during the Nigerian Civil War and is named after the flag of the short-lived nation of Biafra. Adichie’s grandfather died in a refugee camp during the war, and she wrote the book as a tribute to him. In her research for the novel, Adichie found Buchi Emecheta’s Destination Biafra to be very important. The book was awarded the 2007 Orange Prize for Fiction and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. In 2014, it was adapted into a film directed by Biyi Bandele and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandiwe Newton.
